WordPress 4.7 – Next major release in making


WordPress core team has kicked off the development of WordPress 4.7, the last major WordPress release for the year 2016. As mentioned in an earlier post, 4.7 will be shipped with Twenty Seventeen default theme.

This release focuses on improving the initial theme setup experience, with first beta release planned on October 26, 2016 and final merges window till October 19,2016.

The dry run is planned for December 5, 2016 followed by a 24Hrs code freeze and the official release on December 6, 2016.

You can contribute to the core by picking any ticket on its official release page. Some potential priorities for this major release as mentioned in the kick off meeting are:

  • Improve media library management .
  • Better PDF management.
  • Create a standard WP_Image or WP_Attachment class.
  • Better optimization of full size images.
  • Core media widget.
  • Address HTTPS issues with media.
  • Improve responsive image defaults.
  • Support responsive images in WP_Customize_Media_Control .
  • Support responsive images in the editor.
